Michael Melvin

Executive Director of the Master of Finance program at Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego

Michael Melvin is the Executive Director of the Master of Finance program at Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to this appointment, he was a Managing Director and Senior Research Advisor in Multi-Asset Strategies at BlackRock and Head of Currency and Fixed Income Research in the Global Market Strategies Group at Barclays Global Investors/BlackRock. He has had past teaching positions at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, UCLA, UC San Diego, Arizona State University, and Northwestern University.

His research includes topics such as international finance, investments, market microstructure, currency carry trades and transaction costs, and exchange rate models. He has published more than 50 articles, covering topics such as exchange rates, currency investing, and international equity markets. His research has appeared in Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Economics Letters, Review of Economics & Statistics, Journal of Empirical Finance,  and Journal of Finance, among others. He is also the author of numerous textbooks, including International Money and FinanceInternational EconomicsEconomics, and Fundamentals of Economics.

Dr. Melvin has received numerous awards for his teaching and research, including an outstanding teacher award from Haas School of Business, Fulbright Senior Scholar, Dean’s Council Distinguished Scholar, A.S.U. Graduate College Research and Creativity Award, A.S.U. College of Business Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, A.S.U. College of Business Research Development Award, Commission of the European Communities European Integration Grant, and the Foundation for Research in Economics and Education Fellowship.

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA, an M.A. from San Diego State University, and a B.B.A. from University of Houston.
