Christine Philliou

Associate Professor of History at University of California, Berkeley

Christine Philliou is an Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. She previously taught at Columbia University and Yale University.

Her publications have covered political and cultural interfaces in the eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and Balkans in the early modern and modern eras. She is the author of Biography of an Empire: Governing Ottomans in an Age of Revolution (University of California Press, 2011). Her research has also appeared in International Journal of Middle East Studies, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and Comparative Studies in Society and History.

She holds a Ph.D. in History and an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University, as well as a B.A. in History from Columbia University.
