The Copyright Office has released Identifying the Economic Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Copyright Policy, featuring contributions from Professor Joel Waldfogel.

Over several months, the group engaged in in-depth discussions, consulted with technical experts, and conducted research, culminating in a daylong roundtable event. Their goal was to identify the most significant economic characteristics of AI and copyright and explore key factors that could shape policy decisions. The roundtable provided a structured framework for evaluating economic evidence, helping the broader research community address critical questions and identify optimal policy approaches. A leading scholar in the field, Prof. Waldfogel was part of the group of economic experts examining the intersection of AI and copyright policy.

Prof. Waldfogel is the Frederick R. Kappel Chair in Applied Economics, Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His main research interests are industrial organization and law and economics, and he has conducted empirical studies of price advertising, media markets, the operation of differentiated product markets, and issues related to digital products, including piracy, pricing, and revenue sharing.
