Joel Finard

Joel Finard is the founding Principal of CapMarket Consulting and has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry.  He has consulted players in the financial services industry regarding structured finance transactions and risk management, worked on the trading desks of major banks, structured and executed structured finance transactions and risk management strategies, managed money at a large insurance company, provided expert testimony in complex financial services litigation, and taught economics at the graduate level.

Mr. Finard has assisted financial institutions with the review, assessment, and valuation of complex structured transactions.  In addition, he has provided financial testimony in a variety of large complex financial services litigation in which he was retained by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Canadian Department of Justice, Plaintiffs and Defendants.  His testimony spans areas that include structured finance and structured financial transactions, financial markets, financial risk management, and management oversight and internal controls at financial institutions.  Mr. Finard has been qualified and testified as an expert in US Tax Court, Canadian Tax Court, US Court of Federal Claims, and multiple US District Courts.

Mr. Finard was previously a partner at Deloitte LLP in charge of Deloitte’s Capital Market Consulting Practice serving financial institutions.  At Deloitte he specialized in providing clients with financial services consulting, including risk management and advisory services, structured finance, trading technology, quantitative valuation, and forensic/expert opinions in complex financial services litigation.  Before joining Deloitte, he was a Vice President of Capital Markets Products at HSBC in New York where he structured and executed billions of dollars of capital markets transactions.  Prior to HSBC, Mr. Finard managed an investment portfolio and structured financial transactions for Travelers Insurance Company.  Before entering business, he taught Economics at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.

Mr. Finard received MA and MPhil degrees in Economics from Columbia University, and has been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) since 1992.  He has spoken and published in the areas of derivatives, risk management, and financial services litigation.
