Joseph Harrington

Patrick T. Harker Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Joseph Harrington is the Patrick T. Harker Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are industrial organization, microeconomic theory, and organizations. His current research focuses on collusion and cartels, in order to understand observed collusive practices, develop markers of collusion, and design competition policy to detect and deter collusion. He has previously taught at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Northwestern University, and University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

His research has been presented before competition authorities in Chile, the European Union, Japan, South Africa, and the U.S. He has published two textbooks (Economics of Regulation and Antitrust and Games, Strategies, and Decision Making ) and more than 75 articles. He has been published in journals such as the American Economic ReviewJournal of Political EconomyEconometrica, Management ScienceAmerican Journal of SociologyJournal of Economics and Management StrategyAntitrust Law JournalResearch in EconomicsJournal of Economic Behavior & OrganizationEconomics LettersInternational Economic Review, and Competition Policy International: Antitrust Chronicle, among others.

Dr. Harrington has given many keynote addresses on the topic of collusion and cartels including the Bayard Wickliffe Heath Memorial Lecture at the U. of Florida Levin College of Law, the Conference Policy Lecture at the European Conference in Competition & Regulation, and plenary talks at the annual meetings of the European Association for Industrial Economists (EARIE), Chile Economics Association, and the German Economics Association.

He has performed extensive service on editorial boards in the field of industrial organization including serving as co-editor at the RAND Journal of Economics and the International Journal of Industrial Organization. He is currently associate editor at Economics Letters, the Journal of Industrial Economics, and the Review of Industrial Organization.
