Nick Hillman

Professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Department at University of Wisconsin, Madison

Nick Hillman is a Professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Department at University of Wisconsin, Madison and a faculty affiliate in the La Follette School of Public Affairs and the Center for Financial Security. He was formerly an assistant professor at the University of Utah.

Dr. Hillman studies higher education finance and policy. His research focuses on how policies affect educational access and success. His research focuses on federal student aid, state funding models, and educational opportunity. His research has appeared in American Educational Research Journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Journal of Student Financial Aid, Educational Policy, Teacher’s College Record, Research in Higher Education, Journal of Education Finance, and Review of Higher Education, among others.

Dr. Hillman has an extensive public service record, including being a part of numerous policy briefings on education. For example, he participated in a policy briefing on performance funding with the Bipartisan Policy Council in 2016, and in a congressional staff briefing on student loans with the Association of Community College Trustees in 2015.

He has also served as an associate editor of the Journal of Higher Education and the Journal of Student Financial Aid. He twice received the outstanding reviewer award from the American Educational Research Journal.

He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Indiana University-Bloomington, as well as an MPA and a B.S. in Public Affairs.
